Either Tyrese Gibson really likes to fuel rumors and speculation, or we just might have our John Stewart. After ET, Tyrese had some interesting things to say about recent rumors that he and Chris Pine might be teaming up in the upcoming Green Lantern film.
“I took the oath. I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about,” he said.
Gibson continues, “You know, listen, there are certain things I can’t speak on. But I will say that, however way this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern.”
Personally, I don’t think Tyrese is really the actor best suited for the role of John Stewart. Tyrese’s star is definitely at an all time high. The Fast and Furious films have become a global phenomenon, and every actor associated with the franchise is bound to get some big roles. However, in his previous roles, including the Transformers series, he has always been the sidekick who cracks jokes. That is not John Stewart. Stewart is a former Marine and architect. Unless they change some fundamental characteristics about the Stewart, I’d be worried about Tyrese in the role.
When asked if we could expect him to appear at Comic-con in a few weeks, Tyrese says, “You never know. I might be there on the other side of an announcement.”
This is far from confirmation, of course. If true, this wouldn’t be the first spoiled casting for Warner Bros. When Jason Momoa was rumored for the role of Aquaman, he didn’t do anything to deny it. In fact, he also fueled the speculation to the point where it was already old news when it was announced. Maybe Tyrese is going this route?
Either way, it looks like we can expect answers in a few weeks at Comic-Con.
