A fresh DC animated series is giving Green Lantern a surprising new look inspired by magical girl anime. New story details reveal Jessica Cruz’s journey will be very different from previous Green Lantern adaptations. The upcoming series expands the world introduced in My Adventures with Superman while taking the Green Lantern mythology in a new direction.
Red and Yellow Lanterns enter My Adventures With Green Lantern, plot revealed
Fresh details shared during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival show that My Adventures with Green Lantern will center on Jessica Cruz after her introduction in My Adventures with Superman Season 3. Set in Coast City’s Hal Jordan Memorial High, the story follows Jessica as she juggles everyday school life with learning what it truly means to become a Green Lantern. She also trains at a temple under Kilowog instead of following the traditional Corps training seen in past adaptations. No premiere date has been announced yet (via Polygon).
A preview shown at Annecy revealed one of the show’s biggest changes. Rather than simply reciting the famous Green Lantern oath, Jessica sings it while undergoing a magical girl-style transformation. Actor Auliʻi Cravalho voices Jessica, bringing a fresh interpretation to one of DC’s most popular Lanterns. According to Nexus Point News, the series is set in Los Angeles and features classmates Alex DeWitt, Nikki Jones, Thomas Rowe, and Kyle Rayner as key parts of Jessica’s personal life.
The series will also introduce redesigned Red and Yellow Lanterns. Co-showrunner Jake Wyatt explained the creative team’s approach, saying they “wanted to get weird with the bad guys” and create “hot evil people” who would genuinely frighten Jessica and her friends. Wyatt also said Kyle Rayner was included because he grew up with the character, while Alex DeWitt will have a much larger role instead of following her controversial comic-book fate.
Green Lantern has been in plenty of DC projects over the years, from live-action movies to animated shows and films. But this series is trying something completely different. Instead of sticking to the usual space-based superhero story, it’s fusing Green Lantern lore with magical girl anime elements.
