Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives soon on Disney+
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released on Disney+ on June 24, 2026. The film originally premiered at the Dolby Theatre on December 1, 2025, before releasing nationwide on December 19.
Like the previous films in the franchise, it crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office. However, at roughly $1.4 billion, its total worldwide gross is lower than that of its predecessors. Here is how much the previous two movies made approximately worldwide (via Box Office Mojo):
- Avatar (2009): $2.7 billion
- Avatar: The Way of Water (2022): $2.3 billion
Fire and Ash was also less warmly received by critics, with the film holding a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is notably lower than the scores for the previous two films, which achieved “certified fresh” scores of 76% and 81%. On the other hand, its audience score is “verified hot” at 90%.
Following on from the events of The Way of Water, the film’s story sees Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family face off against Miles Quaritch and the RDA, who have allied with the Mangkwan, an aggressive fire-worshipping Na’vi clan, led by the ruthless Varang, who reject Eywa.
James Cameron directed the film from his, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver’s screenplay. The trio also co-developed the story with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Furthermore, Cameron co-produced the movie with the late Jon Landau through his production banner Lightstorm Entertainment.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, CCH Pounder, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and Edie Falco reprise their roles from previous films. Meanwhile, new additions to the franchise’s cast include David Thewlis and Oona Chaplin.
