Christopher Nolan recently made a surprising pick for James Bond fans by revealing his favorite 007 actor. The Oscar-winning director did not choose Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan. Instead, he named another actor who had only played Bond twice.
Christopher Nolan picks his favorite James Bond
While promoting The Odyssey in an interview with Josh Horowitz, Christopher Nolan was asked to name his favorite James Bond actor. He named Timothy Dalton as his favorite Bond actor.
“My favorite Bond actor is Timothy Dalton, and I think The Living Daylights is very, very good. Very, very good. A little bit let down by the climax a bit, in technical terms, I think. But it’s very, very good a lot of the way through, and he’s fantastic,” Nolan said.
Nolan also praised Dalton’s second Bond movie, saying it has improved with time. “Even Licence to Kill, which is aging better than I expected in some ways. But I think he’s closest to the character in the book. It would have been interesting to see him do more,” he added.
His choice may surprise many Bond fans. Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan are often considered the most popular modern 007 actors. Craig starred in five Bond films, while Brosnan appeared in four. Dalton, meanwhile, played James Bond only twice in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill.
He was also asked if he had finally gotten his Bond ambitions out of his system. “I think it would be strange to follow up Tenet with a Bond film. That would be a bit weird,” Nolan replied. Still, he admitted the franchise continues to inspire him.
“I thought I had after Inception, but I think whenever you think about big action movies, your brain is always going back to the things you grew up with. So, for me, that’s Star Wars, that’s Bond, that’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, you know,” Nolan added.
He continued, “Which, in some ways, is Bond with a hat and a whip, you know. But I think you inevitably are drawn back to the things that took you into different realms, you know, as a kid. And, yeah. So, for me, that’ll always be the Bond films.”
