In a recent interview with IMDb, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland talked about the director’s skills as a filmmaker. The duo also revealed that the pig transformation scene was not CGI but was “all real.”
Reflecting on how different the finished scene looked on screen from what they experienced during filming, Hathaway said, “The thing that I think people can’t believe is we were there and we still don’t know how it happened. Like we were there, we participated in the shots, and then we saw it and were like, ‘How did he do that?'”
Holland agreed, adding, “Yeah, like when they turn the people into pigs? That’s all real. It’s all animatronics.” Hathaway continued, “All that sculpting that she’s doing? That’s not CGI.” The two continued enthusiastically, adding, “That is a practical effect. It’s not CG!”
The Spider-Man star explained, “It’s an animatronic head. And she, like, pulls their jaws apart and stuff? That’s real!” Hathaway further explained, “They worked with an artist to create something that Samantha [Morton] could sculpt, live on camera.”
The actor shared his experience of further watching the movie and asking Nolan about the scene. He recalled the director telling him that the scene was created using “camera angles and animatronics and a bunch of actors that were really game to do something crazy.”
The Odyssey has already set many milestones for Nolan, from being his highest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes to being the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The film follows Matt Damon’s Odysseus on his 10-year journey home while his Queen (Hathaway) and son, Telemachus (Holland), wait for the king of Ithaca’s return.
