The Conjuring 5 has landed another major addition to its cast. The upcoming horror prequel is bringing in an Oppenheimer star to its growing ensemble cast.
Oppenheimer star joins The Conjuring: First Communion horror prequel
Matthias Schweighöfer has joined the cast of The Conjuring: First Communion, according to a recent exclusive report from Deadline.
The German actor is best known for playing Werner Heisenberg in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. He also starred in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, portraying Ludwig Dieter. He reprised the role in the prequel Army of Thieves, which he also directed. He was last seen in the 2025 German science-fiction thriller Brick. His other notable projects include What a Man, The Manny, You Are Wanted, Elio, and more.
As the filmmakers look to expand the $2.7 billion horror franchise, Schweighofer’s addition has generated significant excitement among fans. Although both the plot and Schweighofer’s exact character remain undisclosed, the excitement is already catching on.
Following the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites, the franchise’s fifth installment will tell a prequel story exploring the celebrated paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren’s early years. Directed by Rodrigue Huart, the two regulars of the franchise, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, will be absent this time. Their roles will be taken over by Amanda Fix and Garrett Wareing, who will play younger versions of the paranormal investigator couple, Lorraine Warren and Ed Warren, respectively.
The last film of the franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites, had turned out to be a massive success, grossing over $499 million worldwide on a reported budget of $55 million. Huart will aim to maintain the franchise’s high standards, working from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing.
The Conjuring: First Communion is expected to release worldwide on September 10, 2027.
