Samuel L. Jackson Joins Spike Lee’s Old Boy

Samuel L. Jackson is joining Spike Leeā€™s remake of Chan-wook Parkā€™s revenge thriller classic Old Boy for a pivotal scene in which he gets tortured by Josh Brolin who is playing the hero of the movie.

Jackson has long been considered one of the most successful actors in Hollywood, having appeared in movies that have grossed $11.7 billion worldwide including all three ā€œStar Warsā€ prequels, Pixar Animationā€™s The Incredibles and both ā€œIron Manā€ movies. Reprising his role as Nick Fury in the summerā€™s biggest blockbuster Marvelā€™s The Avengers has put Jackson over the top with another $1.4 billion made by that movie alone. Before Jackson became in such demand, he appeared in a number of Spike Leeā€™s earlier films, including School Daze, Moā€™ Better Blues and Jungle Fever, and the duo recently appeared on stage together at the BET Awards. Later this year, Jackson will co-star in Quentin Tarantinoā€™s anticipated Western Django Unchained.

Old Boy is scheduled to start filming in New York and Louisiana this fall, produced by Mandate Pictures, and Spike Lee has found an unconventional composer to score the movie in Bruce Hornsby, the piano-playing songwriter best known for his 1986 hit ā€œThe Way It Is.ā€ Hornsby scored Leeā€™s baskeball doc Kobe Doinā€™ Work, and his latest film Red Hook Summer, which opened in theaters last week.

In a separate interview with the Times, Hornsby told them, ā€œIā€™m working on a few things and Iā€™ll send them to Spike soon. The ā€˜Dā€™ word (referring to the dark tone) has been spoken to me by him, but I think the score will also run the gamut.ā€
