I expect there will be plenty of bitching about this news around the Internet as anything most of the onliners saw when they were in elementary school is sacred to their childhood and must not be touched as a result (I have even fallen prey to such bitching in the past). The latest to fall into that category is news Disney is planning to remake 1986’s Flight of the Navigator with Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs) already writing the script.
The original tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. NASA scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family.
I do remember loving this film when I first saw it in theaters 23 years ago and then again on VHS as I wore out the tape, but I haven’t seen it in so long a remake doesn’t really bother me as much as it just doesn’t interest me. After all, this isn’t a film for someone my age even though I may easily take enjoyment out of it. The original film was for kids just as I expect this one will be so to get too worked up about it would be a waste.
There is no word on a director and no talk of an anticipated production start so this is in the very early stages.
