Paramount has decided to bring Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender to theaters, but with one major catch. The Avatar Studios film was originally scheduled for a theatrical release, but those plans were canceled. At the time, Paramount announced that the film would debut exclusively on streaming.
When is Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’s theatrical release date and what’s the catch?
Paramount has now decided to give the film a limited theatrical release solely to qualify for awards (via Variety). As such, the film will play only in New York and Los Angeles during the week of its Paramount+ release. The report reveals that the film will have three showtimes per day at AMC Burbank 8 in L.A. and the AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan. Those interested in watching the film on the big screen can buy the tickets starting at 9 am PT on July 16, 2026. The limited release is intended to make the film eligible for Academy Awards consideration.
Besides the theatrical release, fans attending San Diego Comic-Con will be able to watch the film one day early at a special screening. The film’s panel on the first day of Comic-Con will feature its voice cast and creative team. The film was originally titled The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

The film is set after the finale of the original animated series. The film’s leak upset many animators who worked on it, which was followed by the leaker’s arrest. Elsewhere, the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 recently concluded its run on Netflix to low viewership.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is directed by Lauren Montgomery and co-directed by Steve Ahn and William Mata. The film stars Eric Nam as Aang, joined by Dave Bautista, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, Steven Yeun, and Dionne Quan.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender releases on July 25, 2026, on Paramount+.
