Matt Damon just named his GOAT superhero and roasted Tom Holland’s legacy in the same breath. The Odyssey costars traded playful jabs about their favorite heroes during a candid interview ahead of the film’s release.
Matt Damon says he used to dress up as Spider-Man as a kid
Matt Damon revealed Spider-Man as his favorite superhero during a Complex GOAT Talk interview alongside Tom Holland. The actor shared that he used to dress up as Spider-Man regularly as a child. He noted that he was “too old” by the time the first Spider-Man film came around with Tobey Maguire.
Damon playfully ribbed Holland about the franchise’s quality under his tenure. He acknowledged the strong lineup of actors who previously played the role. “There’s been a parade of excellent actors in that role, and then you took it,” Damon jokingly told Holland, before the Spider-Man star added, “Went to s—.”
Holland prompted the candid admission by teasing Damon about his delayed response. “Why are you taking so long to answer this, man? Are you thinking of Ben in that Superman costume?” Holland asked. Damon then confirmed his choice by saying, “I’d have to say Spider-Man. That was the one as a kid.” Holland later said, “We are not arguing at all.”
The interview aired ahead of their upcoming film The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Damon as Odysseus and Holland as his son Telemachus. Universal Pictures will release the epic adaptation on July 17, 2026, in the United States and United Kingdom.
Damon and Holland previously worked together on The Odyssey’s press tour across multiple outlets. The pair also appeared in separate GQ and Fandango interviews discussing their experience filming with Nolan. Their on-screen father-son dynamic in the film has carried into a warm rapport during promotional appearances.
