Weekend Box Office Finds ‘Captain America 2’ On Top of ‘Rio 2’

Captain America: The Winter Soldier took the top spot for a second weekend in a row, dropping a little more than I, personally, expected and even more so when you look at Laremy’s and the reader’s predictions. Dipping 56% from its second weekend, the ninth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought home $41.4 million this weekend and has made over $476 million worldwide to this point, which is more than $100 million more than the first film made in its entire global run.

In second is Rio 2, bringing in the exact same amount its predecessor opened with back in 2011, which is to say it sold fewer tickets than the last film considering inflation. With $39 million, however, and what I anticipate will be a huge international box office result, this one won’t have a problem becoming profitable and it has a long time as the lone, major animated movie in theaters as the next animated release will be How to Train Your Dragon 2, which very easily could end up as the highest grossing worldwide release of the summer.

Debuting pretty much as expected, Relativity’s Oculus scared up $12 million and it wasn’t impressing opening day audiences as it did some critics, earning just a “C” CinemaScore. So don’t expect this one to have very long legs.

Even worse than expected, Draft Day recorded a lowly $9.7 million and proved a little stronger with female audiences than males as it scored an “A-” overall CinemaScore, but only a “B+” from the boys.

Fox Searchlight has rolled The Grand Budapest Hotel out nationwide (and I’m actually going to go see it here in a few hours) and from 1,467 locations it grossed over $4 million this weekend for a $2,750 per screen average. Domestically the film has now totaled over $39 million.

As for The Raid 2, which expanded into 954 theaters this weekend. The sequel managed just over $1 million for a $1,063 per theater average. I don’t know what is, or was, expected of this film, I just know I’m not interested.

The Weinsteins finally opened The Railway Man this weekend as any hope for awards season love is clearly out the window, and in four theaters t managed $64,506 for a $16,127 per theater average.

And, finally, Jim Jarmusch‘s excellent Only Lovers Left Alive opened in only four theaters and brought in $96,976 for a $24,244 per theater average. Be on the lookout for this one, it’s one of the best films of 2014 so far, and I might try and catch it later this week for a second time as it will expands into more theaters next weekend.

Next week sees a Wednesday release for Heaven is for Real while Transcendence, A Haunted House 2 and Bears make for the new openings next weekend.
