There was little doubt Robert Downey Jr. would return as Tony Stark/Iron Man for future installments in the Avengers franchise, though I think most of us expect the solo Iron Man films may have come to an end.
However, during the course of doing promotion for Iron Man 3, Downey, more than once, alluded to the fact he had a contract negotiation coming up should Marvel want to keep Downey as the well-groomed Stark. This goes hand-in-hand with the fact Marvel is notoriously stingy with their money to the point Downey, in speaking with GQ about his big Avengers payday said, “They’re so pissed… I’m what’s known as ‘a strategic cost.'”
Well, he played the strategy and while the particulars of the deal will likely never be revealed, Marvel today confirmed Downey will not only return for The Avengers 2 when it hits theaters on May 1, 2015, but he is also under contract for The Avengers 3, which I guess we can expect some time in 2017?
