Tom Holland is about to star in two of the biggest movies in the world: The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. To celebrate Holland’s accomplishments, we’ve ranked his five best movies according to the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.
Holland has predominantly starred in Marvel movies since joining the MCU as Peter Parker. However, The Odyssey is a smart pivot for Holland to prove he can be a star in non-MCU movies. Did Holland’s risk pay off with critical acclaim? Does The Odyssey rank higher than Holland’s Spider-Man movies? Find out below!
Best Tom Holland movies ranked by RT score
5) Spider-Man: Far From Home – 91%
Spider-Man: Far From Home, aka Spider-Man’s European Vacation, checks in at No. 5 with a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. In Holland’s second solo adventure as Spider-Man, Peter and his classmates head to Europe for a two-week summer trip. Though he wanted to avoid his Spider-Man responsibilities, Peter reluctantly agrees to help Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) fight the Elementals.
Many critics cited Far From Home as another successful Spider-Man entry for Holland. It was praised for its entertaining premise, light-hearted romance and riveting action. However, Far From Home came directly after Avengers: Endgame, so some felt it was a minor letdown following the epic team-up movie.
4) Spider-Man: Homecoming – 92%
Though Holland entered the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, he received his first solo outing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Holland’s fourth-best movie on Rotten Tomatoes at 92%. After teaming up with the Avengers in Civil War, Peter returns to New York City in hopes of becoming something more than friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. However, the emergence of the villainous Vulture forces Peter into action despite pushback from Tony Stark.
Holland was praised for nailing Peter Parker’s persona. However, some critics felt it focused too heavily on fitting into the MCU instead of crafting a great Spider-Man movie.
3) Spider-Man: No Way Home – 93%
Spider-Man: No Way Home comes in at No. 3 for Holland at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. After the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the world knows Spider-Man’s identity. When Peter asks for Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret identity, it leads to severe consequences, as villains from other universes want revenge on Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is an example of successful nostalgia as the inclusion of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield worked as a strong narrative device. The movie’s detractors cited that the movie could have benefited from a “less is more” approach and not relied heavily on an abundance of villains and Spider-Men.
2) Avengers: Endgame – 94%
The Infinity Saga came to an epic conclusion in Avengers: Endgame, Holland’s second-best movie at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Following Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War, the surviving heroes must find a way to bring back half of the world’s population. The fate of the galaxy is at stake, setting up a showdown between the Avengers and Thanos.
Avengers: Endgame featured several epic moments that capped off a brilliant decade of storytelling in the MCU. Spider-Man’s reunion with Iron Man also drew big praise. Despite the satisfying ending, some criticized Endgame’s three-hour runtime and how the ending provided more questions than answers.
1) The Odyssey – 96%
This movie has only just arrived, but The Odyssey already sits at the top of Holland’s Rotten Tomatoes rankings at 96%. Christopher Nolan’s epic movie depicts Odysseus and his treacherous journey home after the Trojan War. Holland plays Telemachus, Odysseus’ son.
The initial reviews have called the movie a “once-in-a-lifetime cinematic experience.” Some have stated that the movie loses some momentum during the final hour. It will be interesting to see how fans react once more of them have seen it.
