Saldana Confirmed as ‘Star Trek’ Uhura

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed recent rumors that Zoe Saldana will indeed play Uhura, the USS Enterprise’s chief communications officer in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.

The rumor first surfaced at TrekMovie.com when they learned the 29-year-old actress had been offered the part back at the end of August. Saldana will join Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, is on board as well.

Left to cast are such roles as Dr. McCoy, Scotty, Sulu and, of course, Captain Kirk. The only name of that bunch that seems to have a solid rumor going on surrounding it would be Scotty with rumors that James McAvoy will take on the role. Early rumors attaching Matt Damon to the role of Kirk were quickly squashed as it was revealed the actor was too old for the role.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but rumors surround a bit of time travel and even the death of a prominent member of the crew in an effort to alter the future and therefore leave room for any number of possibilities.

Star Trek is set for a December 25, 2008 release from Paramount Pictures.
