Why Peter Dinklage and Rachel Zegler’s fantasy movie is worth watching today
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes has landed on Netflix today, July 14, 2026. The film serves as a prequel to 2012’s The Hunger Games and is based on the 2020 novel titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
This fifth installment in the series follows a young, broke Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth). He tries to restore his family’s honor by winning an elite scholarship after his father’s demise. However, he must mentor a rebellious District 12 tribute, Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the female tribute from District 12 in the 10th Hunger Games. Meanwhile, the resentful mentor, Dean Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), keeps a close watch on his actions. Snow helps Lucy cheat her way to survival, setting him on a path to becoming a ruthless dictator.
Released eight years after The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015, this prequel recorded the lowest box office gross among the five Hunger Games films. However, it successfully explored Coriolanus Snow’s rise to power and set the stage for the events of the original films. The movie grossed nearly $347 million against a reported $100 million budget during its theatrical run.
The film had a decent reception and holds a 64% Tomatometer score and an 89% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, Lionsgate is continuing the franchise with Sunrise on the Reaping, which is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes blends political intrigue, romance, and strong performances, making it an essential watch for Hunger Games fans. The movie features a talented supporting cast that includes Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, and Josh Andres Rivera.
