Box-Office Wrap-Up: Aug. 17 – Aug. 19

Superbad delivered this weekend, even beating out its predecessor American Pie by about $5m (once adjusted for inflation). So then, either it’s a better movie or people are more aware of what the product is. Either way, pop the bubbly fellas.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Four Weeks In A Row
Eh, I’ll take it. It had no one in it, which actually might be the new path towards financial success. Nobodies cost a hell of a lot less to sign.
Result: $31.2 million (My rank: #1, $6.0m off)
Destruction. That 55% drop means that opening week viewers spread the word to wait until DVD. Which is actually what the studio prefers, that’s where the money is.
Result: $21.8 million (My rank: #2, $2.4m off)
I was one of the people who saw Bourne again this weekend. Still a great movie, but the Hollywood logic problems loomed larger for me the second time around.
Result: $18.9 million (My rank: #3, $.3m off)
Wow, I missed the boat here. It seems as though The Simpsons had no real competition for the family dollar this weekend – and yeah, the formerly controversial toon is now familial in nature.
Result: $6.6 million (My rank: #6, $1.7m off)
Holy good God was this defeated. $6m?? That means Nicole Kidman is no longer a bankable star, if ever she was one in the first place.
Result: $6.0 million (My rank: #4, $6.5m off)
This was a great call, I just missed out because The Simpsons rose up and pimped slapped me. It happens to the best of us.
Result: $5.2 million (My rank: #5, $.6m off)
I wonder if they will start showing this every five minutes on TBS like they do Grease. I sure as hell hope not, even if it is good. Edited movies with commercials on television are a joke.
Result: $4.2 million (My rank: #8, $.4m off)
They promoted this on Comedy Central which is usually a sign that you’re completely screwed. It’s like “Hey, come see how we made this movie, and PLEASE go see it.” You hear that last part right before you change the channel.
Result: $3.6 million (My rank: #9, $.1m off)
Really I just didn’t want to type out the title anymore. I don’t think that makes me a bad person.
Result: $3.5 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
Where have you gone Happy Gilmore? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Result: $3.5 million (My rank: #10, $.4m off)
