Whoopi Goldberg has a brutal comparison for ‘nepo baby’ label
Whoopi Goldberg compared the term “nepo baby” to being called a “DEI hire” during Monday’s episode of The View. She made remarks while the panel discussed Gracie Abrams’ recent comments about benefiting from being the daughter of filmmaker J.J. Abrams and executive Katie McGrath.
Making her position clear, Goldberg said, “Let me tell you what being a nepo baby is like. When you say that about somebody, it’s like calling them a DEI hire.” She explained that the label immediately suggests a person’s accomplishments are undeserving, adding, “It’s like saying you didn’t get this on your own.” Goldberg also defended Abrams, saying, “She’s incredibly talented, and nepo babies, they don’t have a choice who they’re born to!”
Co-host Ana Navarro said Abrams deserved credit for recognizing the opportunities available to her. She also argued that criticism is often directed at public figures who refuse to acknowledge those advantages.
Goldberg responded by bringing up her daughter, Alex, who has previously rejected the “nepo baby” label. “I know my kid doesn’t like being called a nepo baby. What she does, she does on her own. She got it. She worked her behind off. Once they step out of your house, they are going out to do their thing,” she said.
Goldberg argued that people should stop assuming success is solely the result of family connections. “I get very annoyed with this subject because I don’t like when people don’t give — don’t assume!” she said. The host concluded that people should instead be asked about their own careers and achievements.
