Shang-Chi 2 finally has a positive update from the director but there’s a catch. Destin Daniel Cretton spoke about the project in development for a long time during an interview promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Shang-Chi 2 likely won’t be released until after Avengers: Secret Wars
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the director of the Asian-hero movie was asked about a Shang-Chi sequel, to which he replied, “Yeah. I also would love to see Shang-Chi 2! I was talking to Dave Callaham, our writer, about it just a few weeks ago, so fingers crossed.”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of the few successful instalments that the MCU had after Avengers: Endgame. The movie, starring Simu Liu, blended action and comedy and added a mysterious post-credits scene for the sequel to carry on.
However, the next chapter in Liu‘s heroic journey won’t be released before Avengers: Secret Wars, which is slated for a December 17, 2027, release. This is because the helmer is currently working on other projects, including a live-action adaptation of Naruto. Based on his statement, the movie’s script is still not underway.
In the past, a Disney+ series was confirmed to release, but was later scrapped. Moreover, the web-slinger director also spent time working on Avengers: Kang Dynasty, which was replaced with Doomsday. In fact, the actor shared his sentiments about his character in a recent interview.
Regardless, this news is received positively by those anticipating the hero’s next chapter. While in the movie he defeated the Dweller-in-Darkness using his Ten Rings, the secret behind them remains a mystery. This will most likely be explored in the sequel, with hints dropped around in the upcoming two Marvel movies.
Additionally, it was recently revealed that Shang-Chi might have a greater role in the upcoming Avengers movies. This could build up to the anticipated sequel.
The hero will be next seen in Avengers: Doomsday, releasing on December 18, 2026.
