Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has achieved something no other 2026 release has come close to matching. In just two weekends, The Odyssey has not only broken box office records but redefined what an R-rated historical adaptation can accomplish commercially.
The Odyssey continues to show strong legs in second box office weekend
The Homeric adaptation pulled in around $87 million across 3,942 North American venues during its sophomore frame, from July 24 to 26, a mere 30% drop from its colossal approx $123.5 million opening (via Box Office Mojo). That retention rate defies standard blockbuster behaviour. Films launching above $100 million usually shed half their audience or more by the second weekend. An R rating typically compounds that challenge by barring under-18s from purchasing tickets.
Yet Nolan’s reputation appears to override conventional headwind. The director’s ability to turn dense, adult-skewing material into must-see theatrical events remains peerless. The Odyssey now claims the second-largest second weekend ever for an R-rated picture, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine, which collected over $96 million after a record-shattering $221 million domestic debut (via The Hollywood Reporter).
After all, domestic receipts stand at $286 million, while international markets have contributed $353.2 million, pushing the global tally to $639.6 million after just 10 days, according to Box Office Mojo. These numbers already place The Odyssey among the year’s highest earners, with plenty of runway ahead.
Moreover, IMAX performance has proven particularly extraordinary. Nolan filmed the entire feature using IMAX’s high-tech cameras, an unprecedented commitment given the equipment’s notorious bulk, noise, and expense. The gamble has paid off as IMAX screenings have generated $140 million worldwide, with $78 million coming from domestic venues and $62 million from international markets (via Variety). The movie reached the $100 million IMAX milestone in merely 10 days.
Now, a significant test looms next weekend with Spider-Man: Brand New Day swinging into theaters. The Sony Marvel movie starring Tom Holland and Zendaya is highly anticipated.
