Simu Liu shared what he feels about Shang-Chi 2 in an interview at the San Diego Comic-Con. The character made its debut in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the discussion about a sequel has been going around since then. Liu returns as Shaun / Shang-Chi in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and has featured prominently in various promotional material for the movie, leading to renewed interest in the follow-up among the fans.
Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi 2 update isn’t great news
Liu discussed Shang-Chi 2 during an interview with ScreenRant Plus after the SDCC panel for Avengers: Doomsday. When the interviewer noted that one of the biggest and unfulfilled predictions for today was that the fans would finally get a Shang-Chi 2 announcement, Liu responded, while shaking his head, “Man, if I had a nickel…”
The Barbie actor continued, “Look, I’m going to take the high road here and say that it’s really incredible how much the fans continue to show up for this character and continue to express their enthusiasm. I hope they continue to do so, because I think it is making a difference.”
Liu noted that it has been five years since the last one before underscoring how “incredible” it is that people still come up to him to tell him “how much they appreciated the movie.” The actor made it clear that he couldn’t “wait to do more,” adding, “I will be there. I will crawl through broken glass to do it if I have to.”
Notably, Doomsday marks Liu’s only second live-action appearance as Shang-Chi. He also voiced iterations of the character in the Disney+ series What If…? and Marvel Zombies. In the above interview, the Kim’s Convenience star clarified that, as things stand, the development of the sequel “unfortunately” isn’t under his control.
Notably, the sequel had been in development since 2021. It currently doesn’t have a release date.
