Call of Duty’s big-screen debut just locked in the one setting fans have been demanding for years. The film’s director revealed where the upcoming adaptation will take place and who is helping bring it to life.
The Call of Duty movie heads into Modern Warfare
Paramount Pictures and Activision have revealed that their upcoming Call of Duty film will take place within the Modern Warfare storyline. Director and co-writer Peter Berg shared the update at the Call of Duty in Culture Panel during Fanatics Fest in New York City. The movie currently has a theatrical release date of June 30, 2028.
Yellowstone and Landman creator Taylor Sheridan is penning the script alongside Berg for the project. Berg has previously directed films such as Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor, and Deepwater Horizon. David Glasser of 101 Studios is also serving as a producer with Sheridan and Berg.
The theatrical debut will mark the 25th anniversary of the Call of Duty series, which first launched in 2003. The franchise has moved more than 500 million units globally across its lifetime. Previous entries have covered conflicts ranging from World War II and Vietnam to modern and futuristic warfare.
Activision head Rob Kostich discussed the partnership during Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation earlier in April. “I told everyone we were only going to make a movie if it’s right. In David Ellison, we found that partnership,” Kostich stated. He further emphasized wanting to ensure “the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real and infuse that with epic scope” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Modern Warfare remains the most widely recognized and commercially successful branch of the franchise. The newest entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, arrives on October 23 and centers on a conflict between North and South Korea. The series ranks among the highest-selling video game properties in history. Paramount and Activision are now looking to translate that massive fanbase into a major cinematic event.
