Fans are frustrated over Mystique’s new look in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. The shape-shifting mutant is being played by Rebecca Romijn who is reprising the role from the original X-Men trilogy.

One of the shots in the Doomsday trailer shows Mystique suited up in a white X-Men costume. The character is also sporting a new wig, showing off her shorter red hair. However, some fans aren’t liking the new character design. The trailer shows Mystique catching Yelena Belova’s baton and changing her appearance to that of the New Avengers’ leader.
X user @camschlittler took an issue with Mystique’s wig, writing that “whoever is responsible” for it should be “sent to prison for life.”
Another user, @TBWSHooey, said that Mystique’s new look should have had “the same cut as Yelena but red.” In the film, Yelena has slightly longer hair compared to how she looked in last year’s Thunderbolts.
User @pewiot suggested that Romijn should have told the production team that “the wig needs a better styling.” Following that, the user called Mystique’s new look a “mess.” Following the release of the original X-Men films, Romijn publicly talked about how gruelling the make-up process was to slip into the character.
Not all fans are disappointed with the new look, though. Scooper Cryptic HD Quality said that the film’s marketing “butchered her so badly in promo and those leaks.” The user was referring to the character headshots that leaked months ago, spoiling the film’s characters and their new looks.
Besides Mystique, Doomsday also brings back James Marsden as Cyclops. They will reunite with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Alan Cumming as Professor X, Magneto, and Nightcrawler. The X-Men group will also be joined by Channing Tatum’s Gambit, who first appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Following Romijn, Jennifer Lawrence played Mystique in the X-Men films. Marvel Studios has been rumored to want Margot Robbie to play the role in the future.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
