Jared Leto’s unconventional approach to acting is once again drawing attention, this time from the set of Masters of the Universe.
Director Travis Knight revealed that the actor regularly surprised cast and crew while portraying Skeletor, with some of his on-set habits. Speaking to ScreenRant, the director said Leto brought something unexpected to set nearly every day. “He would do something unexpected every single day. In ways that would delight me, that would horrify me, that would make me laugh. But that’s part of the character,” he said.
According to Knight, one of Leto’s more memorable choices involved covering his face with blood-like makeup while filming. Although the actor wore Skeletor’s prosthetic muscle suit and costume, his face was left untouched because it will later be replaced by a CGI skull.
The director added, “But he didn’t want the other actors that he was sharing the scenes with to look at him and see Jared. He wanted them to look at him and see something scary. So he would put this kind of blood-like, smeary makeup on his face. So he looked scary as hell.”
Knight noted that the actor wanted to “swing for the fences” and create a version of Skeletor that audiences would remember long after the film’s release.
The director’s comments come years after Leto’s method acting as the Joker in Suicide Squad generated headlines. While preparing to play the role, Leto generated headlines for several unusual behind-the-scenes stories.
He reportedly sent a pig’s corpse to fellow cast members. The actor also told E! News that he sent used condoms and anal beads to costars including Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
