“The screenplay is finished mostly, but it’s always a work in progress,” Villeneuve said in a recent interview with Collider. “It’ll be a work in progress until final cut, but I will say it’s solidified. I have a script in my hands. We are in prep right now.”

While the screenplay may be ever-evolving, one aspect of the film that will only continue to grow is its use of IMAX footage. Villeneuve also touched on that aspect, noting that he and cinematographer Greig Frasher “fell in love” with the format while filming the first film and that there will probably be even more use of it in the future film.

“Definitely. [Cinematographer] Greig Fraser and I, we fell in love with this format, and definitely there be—even probably more—IMAX footage in this movie. Definitely.”

Following its release last year, Dune has gone to garner critical acclaim from fans and critics alike. Earlier this year it also racked up a whopping 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Picture.
