With news that Nova is headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which actor should play the superhero?
Michael Waldron is reportedly developing a feature film around Nova, a member of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps. Waldron is on board to write the project, and if it moves forward, he could also direct.
With Waldron’s pitch in the development stage, many fans will be speculating as to who should play Nova. Here are three ideal choices for the Marvel hero.
Who would make sense to play Nova in the MCU?
Glen Powell
Even though Nova has not been officially announced by Marvel, the role feels like it’s Glen Powell‘s to lose. Powell is a charismatic onscreen presence who has thrived in multiple genres, including action (Top Gun: Maverick), adventure (Twisters), comedy (Everybody Wants Some!!), and romantic comedy (Anyone but You).
Waldron is quite familiar with Powell’s work, as the two co-created Hulu’s Chad Powers. In a previous interview, Waldron even said that Powell would be a good fit to play Nova. If Waldron writes and directs the project, Powell has to be the first choice.
Dylan O’Brien
Dylan O’Brien knows what it takes to carry a franchise based on IP. O’Brien starred in The Maze Runner trilogy, based on the novels by James Dashner. Other action movies on O’Brien’s resume include American Assassin, Love and Monsters, and Infinite.
Like Powell, O’Brien has a witty side that comes through in his performance. His roles in Teen Wolf, Not Okay, and Saturday Night were great showcases for his comedic chops.
Being cast in a superhero movie is all about timing. Is there buzz around your name? Earlier this year, O’Brien turned in an excellent performance in Sam Raimi’s Send Help. Now is the time for O’Brien to cash in, level up, and become a bigger star.
Dominic Sessa
Speaking of budding stars, Dominic Sessa is a name to keep an eye on from young Hollywood. He was terrific as Angus Tully in The Holdovers, his feature film debut. Sessa parlayed that into a supporting role in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, where he showcased his charming potential.
Again, superhero casting is all about potential. Could this actor become a star? Next month, Sessa’s star power gets its first test in Tony, Matt Johnson’s biopic about a young Anthony Bourdain. Tony won’t make or break Sessa’s career, but a positive reception could strengthen his leading man potential, something one must have to play a superhero.
