Why Christopher Nolan Wrapped The Odyssey Nine Days Early and Under Budget

Christopher Nolan isn’t slowing down but The Odyssey may be his biggest challenge yet. The upcoming movie was filmed across several countries with a large cast and a huge budget. Nolan managed to finish the movie on budget earlier than planned, even with its massive scale.

Inside Christopher Nolan’s early, under-budget finish on The Odyssey

During an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Nolan shared that the team planned a 100-day shooting schedule. Instead, they completed the movie on Day 91. He explained that everyone involved had reached their limit and that it was the right time to stop production.

“The reality is, we went in at a hundred days and by Day 91, we couldn’t have taken another step. So we finished at the right time,” Nolan said. He also added that the cast and crew were simply exhausted after months of shooting. “Everybody was done. I mean, people were just exhausted. They’d been through it,” Christopher Nolan stated.

The director’s comments align with earlier reports describing The Odyssey as an intense production. The team filmed on location in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta over several months.

Despite those challenges, Nolan still completed the movie under budget. Stewart admitted he was surprised and said, “[That] never happens. How?” Nolan replied that the production had enough time and resources to finish the movie properly without going over schedule.

Nolan is known for carefully planning large productions. He has directed several big films, including The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.

Even with one of the biggest productions of his career, Nolan knew exactly when the job was done, while still pushing his team to deliver their best work. However, his latest comments highly reflect that The Odyssey’s success came from preparation and experience rather than rushing the process.
