A new DCU Superman spin-off series has reportedly cast its first major antagonist, pulling a telepathic ape from the pages of The Flash comics into live-action, aka Gorilla Grodd. The project reportedly will take the form of a true-crime docuseries, with Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen as the lead.
DCU reportedly casts Scream 7 star as Gorilla Grodd
Jimmy Tatro, who recently appeared in Kevin Williamson’s Scream 7, will play the hyper-intelligent Gorilla Grodd, Deadline reported, citing sources. This is the character’s first major live-action appearance since the Arrowverse, bringing a classic Flash rogue into a new format.
The DCU series itself takes an unusual approach. It is described as a true-crime docuseries hosted by Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, who will reprise his role from Gunn’s Superman. Season 1 will focus specifically on the criminal activities of Gorilla Grodd, a hyper-intelligent ape who frequently battles The Flash.
For those unaware, Grodd is a formidable psychic villain who gained his powers after an encounter with an alien spaceship. Created in 1959 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, the character traditionally seeks to rule both simian and human worlds.
The project hails from American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault. The duo will serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran executive produce alongside Galen Vaisman. Warner Bros. Television is also producing.
Jimmy Tatro, credited with roles in Scream 7 and the upcoming Will Ferrell golf comedy The Hawk, will step into the mocap-heavy role. Besides his horror turn in Scream 7, he stars opposite Ferrell in Judgment Day and has appeared in 22 Jump Street.
HBO has not yet officially greenlit the series, though reportedly casting a major character like Grodd suggests momentum behind the scenes. Sources told Deadline that talks have concluded as fans anticipate the Gorilla Grodd DCU introduction.
