Task Season 1 Blu-ray Review: Mark Ruffalo HBO Show Is Thrilling

Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby returned to HBO with his latest series, Task, last year. The crime thriller starring Mark Ruffalo was an instant hit with critics and the audience, which has led to it being renewed for a second season. Now fans can own the Task Season 1 Blu-ray and enjoy all seven episodes at home without having to stream it on HBO Max.

“From creator Brad Inglesby (Mare of Easttown), the HBO Original Series Task is set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, where an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) heads a task force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man (Tom Pelphrey),” says the official description.

Task stars Ruffalo as a Catholic priest turned FBI agent who is investigating a series of armed robberies perpetrated. Taking full advantage of its Philly-based story, the crime drama winds up being truly captivating and features a stellar cast that also includes Tem Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, and Raul Castillo. While bleak at times, the show is brilliantly written, and I can’t wait to see it return for Season 2 (with Mahersherla Ali joining the cast, no less).

The Task Season 1 Blu-ray looks great. The series is wonderfully shot, with a gritty look that keeps the viewer on edge. It also sounds as good as it looks, featuring a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. With no compression or loss of detail like streaming, this is the best way to watch.

There’s a solid amount of bonus features, as it compiles the “Task Unmasked” behind-the-scenes featurettes that followed the show. These are short, ranging from six to seven minutes, but they emphasize the themes and give a good look at what went into the show’s production. There’s also a pretty funny Philly Slang quiz included, which I got a real kick out of, being from Pennsylvania.

Task Season 1 Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

Task is one of HBO’s best new shows, and having the ability to own the first season on Blu-ray is particularly exciting. All seven episodes of the show look great, and it’s a great way to revisit the show ahead of the upcoming second season.
