The Chocolate Wars book in development as TV drama

Deadline reports that British production company Fable Pictures, ran by producer Faye Ward (The Crown), is in talks to adapt The Chocolate Wars for the small screen.

Fable Pictures has partnered with writer Smita Bhide (The Indian Detective,Transporter) and director Tom Harper (The Aeronauts) on the project. Harper, who also worked on BBC drama War & Peace, will serve as executive produce alongside Ward and Hannah Farrell (Jane Eyre).

The book The Chocolate Wars (get your own copy by clicking here), written by Dana Cadbury, tells the story of the intense rivalry over the creation of the world’s first chocolate bar. The book was originally published in 2010, and charts over 150 years of Cadbury family history in a mix of historical fact and fiction. The series intends to use the then-burgeoning chocolate industry as a metaphor for both the industrial revolution and how capitalism took hold on society.

“This is an evocative piece of history that I have always been intrigued by. I love that it still continues to give us pleasures and comfort in our everyday lives today,” Ward said in a statement. “It’s the enduring, complex conflict between the families that really give the show its heart and soul, and we’re thrilled to have Smita and Tom on board to bring this unique story to life on screen.”
