The Conjuring Prequel’s New Ed & Lorraine Warren Actors Make No Sense After Last Rites

The most recent casting announcement for The Conjuring prequel makes no sense at all, after a well-received introduction in 2025’s The Conjuring: Last Rites. Despite getting praise for their portrayal of a young Ed and Lorraine Warren in Last Rites, Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor weren’t tapped to return in The Conjuring: First Communion. Instead, New Line Cinema decided to replace them with Manifest star Garrett Wareing and Orphan Black: Echoes star Amanda Fix, who are not set to succeed Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the new faces of the blockbuster horror franchise.

The Conjuring: First Communion will be directed by Rodrigue Huart, with Richard Naing & Ian Goldberg writing the screenplay. The movie will be produced by Peter Safran, with John Rickard, Natalia Safran, and Romel Adam executive producing. Further details about the plot are still under wraps, but it’s expected to follow Ed and Lorraine’s early years.

Why The Conjuring prequel’s recasting makes no sense

Even though Wareing and Fix have already starred in several TV shows, it still made no sense why the studio decided to enlist fairly new actors to carry on the iconic horror franchise’s next chapter. If they wanted fresh new faces for the franchise, I believe that they should have just brought back Smith and Lawlor, whose performances as Ed and Lorraine had already been a proven success. Their uncanny resemblance to Wilson and Farmiga was also something that the fans liked from Last Rites, which would have made the transition seamless. That’s why it was really puzzling why the studio decided to recast for the First Communion.

The studio’s decision to recast would have been more reasonable if they wanted to recruit established actors to play the leading roles. However, tapping a new set of up-and-coming actors to spearhead their next major Conjuring film was definitely a risky move on the studio’s part. It’s intriguing why the creative team would take on such a great gamble. However, since Smith and Lawlor are also lesser-known actors, bringing them back was also a bit of a risk. Their only advantage over Wareing and Fix is that fans are already familiar with them, and that their portrayal of Ed and Lorraine had already gotten approval from critics and fans.

Overall, Wareing and Fix definitely have big shoes to fill. The Conjuring: First Communion will serve as their first high-profile project as leads. It would be interesting to see how they’ll make the characters their own and how it would be similar to the original actors’ iconic performances.
