Yellowjackets‘ biggest star has played the same teenager for seven years straight. She admitted that returning for another season has become challenging despite the series’ success. The actor feels that the same role is creatively limited.
Why is Yellowjackets’ Sophie Thatcher tired of her Natalie Scatorccio role?
During a recent interview with Variety, Sophie Thatcher was asked whether she related to the actors on long-running shows like The O.C., many of whom reportedly wanted out after its third season as they outgrew their roles and wanted to shift to other projects. Thatcher answered that she could relate, though she has no criticism of the series’ writers.
“I personally feel a bit stunted having to play the same character,” Thatcher said. She further mentioned that doing Natalie’s emotionally demanding scenes has become easier over time because of her own developed “cheat codes” to quickly get into the character’s mindset.
For Thatcher, the hardest challenge is playing a younger version of Natalie years after filming the pilot. Going back to the same emotional place she was in seven years ago feels confusing because she has grown both personally and professionally.
“I want to continue to grow, but then I have to go back to where I was when I was a kid,” she said. It is important to note that her comments are not directed at the creative team behind the series. Instead, they only reflect her wish to take on new characters while continuing her journey here.
Yellowjackets is a psychological drama and stars an ensemble cast of Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Lauren Ambrose, Nélisse, Brown, Eaton, Samantha Hanratty, Liv Hewson, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole, Alves, Sarah Desjardins and many others. Lionsgate Television produces the series, while Paramount Global Content Distribution distributes it outside Paramount+ markets.
Yellowjackets is returning for its fourth and final season and is currently in development. This brings Thatcher’s role to an end.
