House of the Dragon’s Shocking Return Brings Back a ‘Dead’ Character

Everyone thought he drowned in the Battle of the Gullet, but House of the Dragon just proved them wrong. A presumed-dead character made a shocking return in Season 3, Episode 5, and his comeback could change the entire war.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 shows a shocking return

House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5 brought back a character many fans assumed was dead. Tyland Lannister survived the Battle of the Gullet despite Admiral Lohar throwing him overboard in heavy armor. He resurfaced at Rook’s Rest with a group of cheap sellswords he hired along the way.

Meanwhile, Larys Strong had just convinced Aegon II to board a ship to Essos and abandon his quest for revenge. However, Tyland’s sudden arrival completely derailed those plans. Actor Matthew Needham revealed in HBO’s Inside the Episode that this reunion creates serious problems. “The arrival of Tyland is a disaster for Larys,” Needham said about his character’s careful scheming falling apart.

Furthermore, Tyland pushes for the group to travel to Lannisport instead of Essos. Larys and Tyland immediately clash over the safest route for the deposed king. Despite this disagreement, both recognize that Aegon remains a valuable asset in the war.

Additionally, trouble arrives when a camp leader named Garrick discovers Aegon’s hidden crown. Aegon responds by stabbing the man multiple times in a violent outburst. Showrunner Ryan Condal explained that this moment carries deeper meaning for Aegon’s arc. “I think it’s also a reclamation, of saying, ‘Don’t they know I’m the f—— king?'” Condal noted.

Notably, Tyland’s return also entirely shifts the war’s financial landscape. He previously hid the crown’s gold reserves before Rhaenyra seized King’s Landing. Rhaenyra currently struggles to pay the City Watch or cover mounting royal debts. Consequently, Aegon now has access to someone who knows exactly where the royal gold went. This knowledge could fund new alliances and buy crucial loyalty across the realm.

House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 6 premieres Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
