Cult Classic 80s Movie Gets Netflix TV Reboot With a Twist

Netflix has officially granted a series order to its upcoming TV reboot of 1985’s cult classic mystery comedy movie Clue, which was based on the iconic Hasbro board game of the same name. The project is a reality competition series, which will feature contestants trying to outwit each other through different challenges.

“Like so many families and friends over the years, we’ve gathered around the table trying to figure out who did it — making Clue a source of nostalgia that everyone shares,” Netflix executive Jeff Gaspin said in a statement. “Thanks to the incredible vision of our partners at Hasbro, IPC, and B17, we’re delivering a fresh, imaginative whodunit competition that will invite today’s audiences into that iconic world.”

What do we know about Netflix’s Clue TV show?

In addition to the players, the Clue TV show will also feature appearances from familiar characters from the original board game. These include Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, and Professor Plum. Further details about its creative team, cast, and target release date are still under wraps.

“In the show, players will step into a real-life game of deduction and deception, facing both physical and mental challenges along the way. To win, they’ll have to outwit opponents and answer three big questions: who, where, and with what,” reads the official logline. “If the contestants guess correctly, they’ll add money to the prize pot, but if their suspicions are wrong, they could face elimination. They’ll also cross paths with familiar suspects like from the original board game. Viewers can expect suspense, surprises, and plenty of red herrings.”

Before the Netflix reboot, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds was previously attached to star in a 2022 remake of Clue. However, it appears that the project fell apart, as Sony Pictures successfully acquired the rights to produce both a Clue movie and a television show from Hasbro Entertainment in April 2024.

The original 1985 movie centered around players figuring out which of the guests at a mansion murdered someone, with which murder weapon, and in which room. It was directed by Jonathan Lynn, who also worked on the script with John Landis. The cast included Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren. Despite not performing well at the box office, the movie was still able to garner a cult following.
