Watch: Trailer for ‘Solace’, a One-Time Sequel to ‘Se7en’

Supernatural thrillers are often hit or miss for me, but the combination of cast and crew for a film called Solace has me more interested than I otherwise might be. The film stars Anthony Hopkins as a psychic who works with FBI agents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish) to hunt down a serial killer, played by Colin Farrell.

Newcomer Alfonso Poyart directs from a screenplay pieced together by a handful of names, including Sean Bailey, Peter Morgan (Rush), Ted Griffin (Ocean’s Eleven), James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Jonathan Hirschbein. Obviously there is a lot going on there, and the fact so many writers have contributed to the script could certainly be a sign of trouble, but the names do add to the intrigue a bit.

A little Google searching adds even more intrigue, as the film’s Wikipedia page notes Solace was originally written as a sequel to David Fincher‘s Se7en — Griffin wrote the spec script in 2002, and Fincher was never involved — before the project was scrapped. The script sat around for a while and was re-worked by the writers you see listed above; Bailey and Morgan co-wrote the most recent draft.

FilmNation Entertainment has released an international trailer for the film, which you can see below. There seem to be shades of both Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs here given the history, premise and cast, though coming anywhere near those two movies in quality is obviously a very (very) tall order.
