I recently found out the Seattle screening for Riddick falls on the same day I leave for the Toronto Film Festival. Bad luck eh? I’m actually looking forward to this film despite the fact it feels as if it’s too late for the franchise and they tried to go too big with the sequel following such a small, more intimate effort as Pitch Black, but it looks like this new film is going to be much closer to what The Chronicles of Riddick should have been, a film that slowly establishes a larger world without trying to go too big too soon.
Last night a final trailer for the third film in the Riddick franchise arrives and it makes me wonder, if this does big enough numbers is there any chance Universal gives Vin Diesel and writer/director David Twohy money to do even more?
Riddick hits theaters on September 6. watch the trailer below
Vin Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.
The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
