Box Office Results: Taken 2 on Top a Second Straight Weekend

Twentieth Century Fox Film sequel Taken 2 remained in first place at the box office with an estimated $22.5 million. Directed by Olivier Megaton and starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen, the $45 million-budgeted film has earned $86.8 million domestically. Internationally, Taken 2 added $41 million for a total of $132.8 million. The action thriller has made $219.5 million worldwide and will pass the $226.8 million worldwide total of Taken in no time.

At the domestic box office, Warner Bros. Pictures thriller Argo opened in second place. Directed by Ben Affleck, the film earned an estimated $20.1 million from 3,232 theaters, an average of $6,225 per location. Produced for $44 million, Argo received an excellent A+ CinemaScore from moviegoers which should help bring it have great legs.

Third place belonged to Summit’s Sinister, which collected $18.3 million from 2,527 theaters. Averaging $7,222 per theater, director Scott Derrickson’s thriller cost just $3 million to make. While it only received a C+ CinemaScore, the film should be very profitable for the studio.

Sony Pictures claimed the next two spots. Hotel Transylvania brought in $17.3 million its third weekend in fourth place for a total of $102.2 million, while their new comedy Here Comes the Boom, starring Kevin James, debuted in the fifth spot with $12 million from 3,014 theaters, an average of $3,981. The latter received an A CinemaScore.

Universal’s Pitch Perfect came in at No. 6 with $9.3 million, pushing its total to $36.1 million after three weeks. It was followed in seventh by Disney’s Frankenweenie, which added $7 million for a total of $22 million after two weeks. Eighth place belonged to Rian Johnson’s Looper, which brought in $6.3 million and is up to $51.4 million after three weeks.

Opening in ninth place, writer/director Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths earned $4.3 million from 1,480 theaters, an average of $2,889 per site. The $15 million comedy stars Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Tom Waits, Olga Kurylenko and Zeljko Ivanek.
