Just over two weeks ago, we reported on official casting for the upcoming DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad. Alongside confirmation that Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie were set for central roles in the film, there was a rumor that Viola Davis, Oprah Winfrey, and Octavia Spencer were in contention to tackle the role of Amanda Waller, the former congressional aide and government agent who oversees the titular squad.
According to Latino Review, Davis has officially scored the role, provided director David Ayer and his crew are able to make things work with Davis’ shooting schedule for her new hit TV show “How to Get Away with Murder“. Basically, it sounds as though the role is Davis’ for the taking, and the only way someone else will play Waller is if the parties involved are unable to make her filming schedule work.
I feel like I state this every time I write or talk about Suicide Squad, but of all the comic book films coming down the various studio pipelines in the next few years, this is the one I’m most looking forward to, primarily because of its concept but now also because of its director and its enormously talented cast. If the film has a solid script and Ayer directs this cast the way I think he can, we could be looking at a really solid film. And if not, well, at least we can say they tried.
