2014 Toronto Film Festival Adds Kevin Smith’s ‘Tusk’, ‘Leviathan’ and More

This morning the 2014 Toronto Film Festival announced their Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard and Contemporary Masters selections for this year’s festival and several high profile names and films are included among the announced titles.

Beginning with the Midnight selection, Kevin Smith‘s Tusk will have its world premiere at the fest before hitting theaters in mid-September along with films such as Adam Wingard‘s The Guest, Jaume Balagueró‘s [REC] 4: Apocalypse, Mark Hartley‘s Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films and Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement‘s co-directed feature What We Do in the Shadows, a comedy featuring Waititi and Clement as immortal vampires just trying to navigate life as creatures of the shadows.

The Contemporary Masters section includes Jean-Luc Godard‘s Cannes winner Goodbye to Language 3D, Hong Sang-soo‘s Hill of Freedom, Michael Winterbottom‘s The Face of an Angel starring Daniel Brühl and Kate Beckinsale and the much talked about Cannes premiere Leviathan from Andrey Zvyagintsev, which Sony Classics has picked up and is pegged to be an early Foreign Language Oscar contender.

The Documentary section includes Merchants of Doubt from Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) about climate change skeptics bought and paid for by corporations, Gabe Polsky‘s Soviet hockey doc Red Army, Marah Strauch‘s Sunshine Superman telling the story of Carl Boenish who pioneered and popularized the activity of BASE jumping, Nick Broomfield‘s Tales of the Grim Sleeper taking a look at the South Central Los Angeles serial killer of the same nickname and a new film from The Act of Killing director, Joshua Oppenheimer that almost seems like a sequel to last year’s doc titled The Look of Silence (Senyap) which follows his work with perpetrators of the Indonesian genocide, resulting in a story focusing on a family of survivors discover who killed their son. The youngest brother is determined to break the spell of silence and fear under which the survivors live, and confronts the men responsible for his brother’s murder.

Finally, in the Vanguard selection you’ll find a new film from Takashi Miike titled Over Your Dead Body as well as Luna from Dave McKean (MirrorMask).
