‘Spider-Man’, ‘X-Men’, ‘Filth’ & ‘Godzilla’: Previewing the Movies of May 2014

It’s interesting to look at the number of upcoming films this month that I’ve already seen. Obviously I’ve already seen and reviewed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (read my review here), which hits theaters this weekend, officially marking the start of the 2014 Summer movie season even though it seem Captain America: The Winter Soldier already did just that.

I’ve already seen (and enjoyed), but have not reviewed Jon Favreau‘s Chef and the Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron comedy Neighbors, both of which hit theaters on May 9. Also opening that same weekend, only in limited theaters are Atom Egoyan‘s awful Devil’s Knot as well as Richard Ayodae‘s nod to Terry Gilliam (admitted or not) The Double (read my review here) starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. Both of those films I’ve seen and didn’t necessarily care for either, though Devil’s Knot is a true waste of time.

On May 16 we get my most anticipated blockbuster of the summer, Godzilla, though it seems many are beginning to wonder about the film’s quality as the number of trailers WB has been releasing is starting to seem a little desperate. Nevertheless, I’m excited. That same weekend comes Million Dollar Arm, a film I haven’t heard a single person say something nice about, and James Gray‘s The Immigrant, which I’ve seen, reviewed and did not enjoy.

On May 23 we get the latest Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore “comedy” Blended, which looks like an absolute train wreck, as well as X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is just now beginning to roll out some clips, the latest of which can be viewed to the right as James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have a little chat.

Seth MacFarlane will hope to enjoy the same success he found with Ted with his Western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West on May 30 and Angelina Jolie will snarl on screen in the title role of Disney’s Maleficent. However, that weekend I’m more excited to see James McAvoy in the hard-R rated Filth, dirty cops snorting blow and screwing hookers is just more my style I guess.

I’ve included the complete May lineup below as well as some trailers for the films coming out. Click on any of the movies for more information and you can always check the updated release calendar right here.
