Your Box Office Predictions for ‘Rio 2’, ‘Captain America 2’, ‘Oculus’ and ‘Draft Day’

Man, only 81 of you predicted this weekend. Is there any particular reason so many of you didn’t predict? You do realize it’s a long year and two successful weekends in a row could easily vault you into the top ten… right?

Anyway, it’s going to be a fun weekend, which is why I wish more people had participated as it’s anyone’s guess which film will take the top spot. Both Laremy and the reader average has Captain America: The Winter Soldier taking first place and the readers narrowly topped Laremy’s $44.6 million by a mere $400,000. Personally, I think you’re all a little high on the prediction and based on the second weekend drops of The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World I think the sophomore Captain America 2 weekend will be around $42.4 million. That said, I’m still not sure Rio 2 has the juice to take the top spot.

Tracking on the animated sequel is around $41 million and the reader average is at $42.6 million, $1.3 million lower than Laremy’s prediction. The first film opened at $39.2 million back in 2011 and went on to a $484.6 million worldwide haul, but most of that was made overseas and given the 50% RottenTomatoes rating, this one may finish even with its predecessor or just slightly higher.

In third, both the readers and Laremy have Oculus and neither are too bullish on its chances. Can you believe we haven’t had a horror film open above $20 million yet this year? I only say this considering we’d had four of them open that high by this time last year. Even Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones couldn’t muster $19 million. Will Oculus be the surprise breakout?

Finally, Draft Day, which has a generous 55% rating at RottenTomatoes. Neither the readers nor Laremy see a bright future for this one, both pegging it around $10.6 million.

I’ve included Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all 90 reader predictions for this weekend click here.
