Supergirl just recorded one of the steepest box office collapses in DC history. The film’s second-weekend numbers reveal a steep decline that puts Warner Bros. on track for massive financial losses.
Supergirl crashes as movie faces DC’s second worst box office drop
Supergirl suffered a catastrophic 74.1% second-weekend drop at the domestic box office, per Box Office Mojo.
The film earned just $9.6 million in its second frame across 3,602 theaters. Notably, that figure marks DC’s second-worst sophomore weekend decline, trailing only Joker: Folie à Deux, which fell 81%. The steep collapse signals poor word-of-mouth reception among general audiences following its underwhelming opening.
Meanwhile, Friday grosses plunged even harder, dropping 80.4% from opening day to just $3.6 million. Saturday estimates then came in at $2.6 million, reflecting a 77% decline despite the Independence Day holiday. As a result, the per-theater average fell to $2,665, down sharply from $10,300 during opening weekend. A third weekend at similar rates would bring grosses below $2.5 million for the entire frame.
The Milly Alcock-led film initially opened to $37.1 million on June 26 against pre-release tracking of $65 million. Its domestic total now sits at $58.5 million after two weekends in theaters. Additionally, the film has grossed $42 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cumulative total to $100.5 million.
Warner Bros. reportedly spent around $175 million on production and an estimated $100 million on marketing. Consequently, the film needs approximately $450 to $500 million globally to break even. At its current pace, domestic grosses may not reach $80 million during the theatrical run.
In contrast, Angel Studios’ Young Washington continues to outperform expectations alongside Supergirl’s decline. The George Washington biopic earned an estimated $21 million in its opening weekend on a $20 million budget. It averaged $7,721 per theater across 2,700 locations, nearly triple Supergirl’s second-weekend average. Young Washington also holds a 92% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting strong word-of-mouth momentum ahead.
