Friday Box Office: ‘Insidious 2’ Opens With Heighest Single September Take Ever

Insidious: Chapter 2 is dominating the box office, bringing in an estimated $20 million on Friday, the highest single day take in the month of September ever and one FilmDistrict is estimating will take in somewhere near $41 million for the weekend. Currently the September opening weekend record is $42.5 million from Hotel Transylvania and I have to assume FilmDistrict is low-balling that estimate in an attempt not to put the cart before the horse. We’ll see.

Looking at the box office predictions from the readers and Laremy, the aggregate reader number was $27.8 million while Laremy only predicted $23.2 million. Given the $13.2 million the original opened with, doubling that number doesn’t seem like such a bad idea, but wow has it over-performed.

The Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer black comedy The Family brought in an estimated $5.4 million and should be on its way to a decent despite lackluster reviews, but then again, negative reviews didn’t hurt Insidious 2.

Additionally, Riddick took a steeper dive than expected with an estimated $2.2 million and perhaps a $7 million second weekend and a 63% drop.

I’ve included the Friday top ten below (via Box Office Mojo) and I’ll be back tomorrow with a complete look at the top ten.
