Sony Classics Will Release Bennett Miller’s ‘Foxcatcher’; Sets December 2013 Release

I had dropped Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher further and further down my Oscar prediction ranks as Sony had made no sign it was going to release the Moneyball director’s film this year, but today came the official press release announcing a December 20 release date for the film which stars Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Steve Carell, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave and Anthony Michael Hall.

With a screenplay by E. Max Frye (Something Wild) and Dan Futterman (Capote) the film tells the gripping, true story of Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark Schultz (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.

Sony Classics released Miller’s Capote in 2005, which eventually went on to win Philip Seymour Hoffman an Oscar for Best Actor.

Quoted in the release Miller said, “I’ve been discussing Foxcatcher with Michael [Barker] and Tom [Bernard] since I began researching the story in 2005 and it’s always been my hope and expectation that they would distribute the film. Their passion and understanding of what Foxcatcher could be and their ability to market unique and complex films makes SPC the ideal home for me. They were great partners on Capote, and I’m thrilled to be back with SPC.”

Interestingly enough, it still hasn’t been slated for any of the fall festivals, which makes me wonder if it just might make an appearance at Telluride next month. Hmmmm, maybe?
