Weekend Box-Office: Pixar on Top with ‘Brave’ While ‘Abraham Lincoln’ Stumbles to Third
By

The family dollar dominates again taking the top two spots at the box-office and keeping an animated film at the top for the third weekend in a row. Considering what’s coming out next weekend I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up four weeks in a row, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves… Let’s break this weekend down in proper fashion…
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 2 Weeks In A Row
Pixar is out of the gates with another hit as Brave not only scores $66.7 million on its opening weekend, but audiences are coming away enjoying it to the tune of an “A” Cinemascore, which might be the most important factor of them all. The opening was the fifth best in Pixar’s history and just a little over a million shy of Up‘s opening back in 2009. The number isn’t quite as 3-D heavy either as only 34% of ticket sales came from 3-D showings, which says more tickets were sold than say Madagascar 3, which saw 45% of its showings coming from 3-D theaters.
Internationally the film had a limited debut and still pulled in $13.5 million from 10 markets (source) and it won’t actually go wide around the world until July, which gives this one a long time to make a lot of money.
On the prediction front Laremy was light, expecting it would have the fourth smallest opening in Pixar history. Oops. His prediction also led a lot of readers to go light as well with Rach being one of the few that went over the $60 million mark with a prediction of $68.3 million making his the best among the reader predictions.
Weekend: $66.7 million RottenTomatoes Score:74% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $57.5 million was $9.2m off for a percentage error of 13.79%.
Family dollar ruled the top of the box-office to the tune of over $85 million as Madagascar 3 dipped only 40% in its third weekend in theaters and has now made over $157 million domestically on a reported budget of $145 million add in its foreign take as of the publishing of this article and it has made over $338 million worldwide.
Weekend: $20.2 million (-40.6% drop) / Cume: $157.5 million / RottenTomatoes:76% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $17.9 million, which is $2.3m off for a 11.39% error.
In second is a bit of a disappointment for Fox given the “C+” Cinemascore and an opening of only $16.5 million for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a film that will have questionable overseas appeal and has a budget of $69 million. If you ever hoped Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies would make it to the big screen this doesn’t bode well for its chances.
On the prediction side of things Laremy went big on this one and comes up $10 million short. Oops. Readers weren’t as bullish with Chad coming closest with his $17.6 million prediction.
Weekend: $16.5 million / RottenTomatoes:39% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $26.5 million, which is $10m off for a 60.61% error.
If we go by box-office alone, Prometheus isn’t going to be getting a sequel as it has only managed just over $239 million worldwide on a budget of $130 million. If we go by our standard 2.5 times multiplier this thing still needs around $85 million just to break even theatrically. Let’s hope those awful Coors Light tie-in commercials paid well and maybe we’ll get that sequel. Otherwise, forget it.
Weekend: $10 million (-51.7% drop) / Cume: $108.5 million / RottenTomatoes:73% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $9.1 million, which is $0.9m off for a 9% error.
It’s hanging around, but the $170 million budget is like a cement block tied to its ankles as it’s thrown out to sea.
Weekend: $8.01 million (-39.3% drop) / Cume: $137.1 million / RottenTomatoes:49% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $7.1 million, which is $0.91m off for a 11.36% error.
I don’t think you’ll be getting a Rock of Ages sequel either. The audience has spoken so far and what they’ve said is, “No thanks.”
Weekend: $8 million (-44.4% drop) / Cume: $28.7 million / RottenTomatoes:41% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $8.1 million, which is $0.1m off for a 1.25% error.
A different audience is saying the same thing about Adam Sandler’s attempt at an R-rated comedy. So, he’s making Grown-Ups 2. You’re welcome world.
Weekend: $7.9 million (-41% drop) / Cume: $7.9 million / RottenTomatoes:22% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $6.5 million, which is $1.4m off for a 17.72% error.
Weekend: $7 million (-21.3% drop) / Cume: $598.3 million / RottenTomatoes:93% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $5.4 million, which is $1.6m off for a 22.86% error.
Considering all the negative buzz surrounding this film, this might be the true shocker of the summer as it has now amassed almost $555 million worldwide and will certainly break even on its massive $225 million budget. I never expected that, but kudos to them.
Weekend: $5.6 million (-44% drop) / Cume: $163.3 million / RottenTomatoes:69% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $7.5 million, which is $1.9m off for a 33.93% error.
Narrowly edging out Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom ($3.4m), Lorene Scafaria’s directorial debut Seeking a Friend for the End of the World managed $3.8 million from 1,625 screens, which isn’t exactly lighting the box-office on fire, but a tenth place finish is at least something.
Weekend: $3.8 million / RottenTomatoes:53% Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked
The biggest news of the weekend is undoubtedly Woody Allen‘s return back to the summer box-office as To Rome with Love opened in a measly five theaters and brought in a massive $379,000 for a $75,800 per theater average.
As Bill mentioned in right here. Granted, reviews haven’t been as glowing as they were for Midnight in Paris, but any chance this one storms the box-office as well?
As for next weekend, we’re looking at the release of Channing Tatum‘s bare-it-all feature Magic Mike, along with People Like Us starring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks, the new R-rated comedy from Seth MacfarlaneTed and Tyler Perry is back in a dress with Madea’s Witness Protection. Then it’s on to July where The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises will attempt to match The Avengers‘s comic book box-office supremacy.
Who yah got at the top next weekend? Brave or one of the newcomers?
