‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Needs a New Marketing Approach

This is called a TV spot, but it runs for 60-seconds, so maybe “extended” TV spot would be more accurate as The Amazing Spider-Man continues its efforts to garner interest in the masses, but with the rise of The Avengers and the oncoming The Dark Knight Rises it feels like Spider-Man has been left behind. Of course, that does open the door for one possibility, that this film could surprise not only in box-office results, but in quality.

What Sony needs to do, if they believe the film will be received on par with The Avengers, is get it in front of press and bloggers around mid-June. Sure, this doesn’t arrive until July 3, but the buzz needs to be out there since this one is going to hit theaters just over two weeks before The Dark Knight Rises, which means Batman fever will be on the rise and Warner’s marketing campaign is sure to be operating on overload. Will anyone be thinking about seeing Spider-Man or will they all be anxiously awaiting Batman?

Sony has issued more than enough pics and trailers, but now they need to get some opinion out there because even those early footage screenings have been forgotten at this point. And that graffiti campaign? Yeah, that never seemed like a very good idea.

That said, I don’t expect this new TV spot will have you rushing to buy an advance ticket, but you can give it a peek anyway.

Directed by Marc Webb and set to hit theaters on July 3, The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance — leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.
