Ben Stiller’s ‘Used Guys’ aren’t Used Up Yet

I was surprised to see I still have Used Guys in the RopeofSilicon database, a film that was supposed to be directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Fockers) back in 2006 with Ben Stiller starring alongside Emily Mortimer and Jim Carrey. Budget, among other things, was cited to be the reason the film was abandoned only a month before shooting was to begin. However, it appears those that may have been anticipating the futuristic comedy may be in luck.

Variety reports Stiller is lighting the fires under the film once again with Little Miss Sunshine directing duo, Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, in talks to direct and word has it Reese Witherspoon has been approached to play the lead female role, but apparently the story for the film has been altered.

The original plot was set in a futuristic world where women run the Earth. Men became extinct because they ingested an enhancement drink that proved fatal. Carrey and Stiller were to play clones rendered obsolete by superior models whose enhancements include better listening and lovemaking skills. The scorned clones make a run for it, bent on regaining their dignity by searching for a male nirvana known as Mantopia.

The above idea has apparently been twisted into something more of a romantic comedy. There is no word on when Fox plans on going into production on the feature. Should Witherspoon sign on, I expect it to move much quicker.
