#1 movie predicted correctly: Ten weeks in a row
It shattered box office records on Wednesday, making somewhere in the range of a kajillion dollars. I’ve got it repeating its Wednesday performance each day of the weekend, minus 10% total. I’m figuring the truly committed have seen it already. This weekend will be repeat viewings and the kids whose parents don’t take them to weeknight showing
Estimate: $87.8 million
2. Transformers
This movie annoys me the more I think about it, I call this the Superman Returns syndrome. Take any movie that was ok in the theater and then ponder for a week how it could have been better and then *poof* you’ve got pent up anger. Try this at home!
Estimate: $37.3 million
3. Ratatouille
It stands at $131m, which means it will end up way less successful than The Incredibles. I actually don’t think that’s an indictment of the film, it’s more of an indication of the level of competition with every film in the world getting a PG or PG-13 this summer.
Estimate: $16.1 million
It will pull down $100m both domestically and internationally which makes it a financial winner, especially when you consider the unrated DVD that’s sure to follow.
Estimate: $9.2 million
5. Captivity
For all the bluster that’s been heard about this one it still remains a film that basically no one wants to see.
Estimate: $5.8 million
Not all non-sequels made it out alive, and here is a good example of a casualty. I hope they got Moore and Krasinski for scale because otherwise they’re proper screwed.
Estimate: $5.3 million
You tearing up Evan? Wanna cry? You gonna squirt some? Suck it up buttercup, that’s what you get for being a miserable film.
Estimate: $4.2 million
8. 1408
Check out the first few lines of the MPAA rating here: “For thematic material including…” So wait, the violence wasn’t outside of the theme of the movie? That’s like saying “For a story and plot involving..” Hey MPAA, you can assume we know you’re talking about the movie you’re rating from here on out. Morons.
Estimate: $3.9 million
9. Sicko
Will the fuss Mike Moore caused this week on Wolf Blitzer’s show help? In a word: Probably.
Estimate: $2.8 million
10. Knocked Up
That Killers Song “Can You Read My Mind” was playing where I ate my lunch and now I can’t get it out of my head. I like the song, which is good, but I’m hoping I don’t play it too much (in my head) because then I’ll probably get over liking it.
Estimate: $2.7 million
