The untitled The Cable Guy pilot has just cast one of The Haves and the Have Nots leads in the project. The update comes as the project is in its pre-production stages. According to reports, the star will take on Kathy Griffin’s role from the original movie.
Reportedly, Crystal Fox will join the cast in the untitled project. She will join the previously announced cast, including Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., and Natasha Rothwell.
Fox will take on the role of Lynette, the mother of Wayans Jr. and Rothwell’s characters. Her character is described as concerned about her son after his breakup and also goes down various social media rabbit holes, according to Deadline.
The official logline reads, “In a world of endless streaming, binging, and algorithms, old-school cable technician Chip Douglas languishes alone — until Steven Stephens calls to have his cable turned back on, reconnecting Chip with a childhood friend he never forgot. The relationship gives each man something he’s been missing… until Chip’s enthusiasm turns into obsession. The show explores the darkly absurd side of modern-day male friendship.”
Crystal Fox is best known for her role in In the Heat of the Night and The Haves and the Have Nots. Her credits include His & Hers, A Fall From Grace, Big Little Lies, Driving Miss Daisy, and Separate But Equal.
Who else starred in the original The Cable Guy movie?
The upcoming project does not have an official title; however, it is inspired by the Jim Carrey movie, which was released in 1996.
Apart from Carrey and Griffin, the ensemble also included Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, George Segal, Bob Odenkirk, Eric Roberts, and Diane Baker.
The movie was a huge box office hit, earning $102.8 million against a $47 million budget. Although it did not do critically well, it gained fans and is considered to be one of the best dark comedy movies.
That said, this new project is a series and is not a remake of the original movie. Rob Rosell, Joe Piarulli, and Luan Thomas will serve as co-showrunners and co-writers. Johnson and Wayans Jr. also executive produce and lead the show. The Hulu comedy pilot does not have a release date yet.
