Robert Downey Jr. has shared an encouraging update on Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel’s upcoming big blockbuster. Following Marvel Studios’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Downey spoke about the project and addressed the team’s ambitions to win back fans after a mixed phase for the franchise.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said that he had seen more of the film than the rest of the cast. Marvel showed exclusive footage at the panel, which included a scene of Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm talking about Victor’s backstory.
When asked how the film will compare to the exclusive Comic-Con footage, Downey Jr. said, “It’s like that except extra. I think we may redeem ourselves yet.” In the same interview, the actor also compared Doctor Doom to Iron Man.
RJD teases a major Mystique moment in Avengers: Doomsday
RDJ also touched on the return of classic X-Men characters in the film. The fifth Avengers movie will see Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer reprise their roles as Mystique and Beast. The film’s first trailer showed a fiery fight sequence between Romijn’s Mystique and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.
“It was a big moment, with you and Kelsey being back,” said Downey Jr., referring to Mystique’s fight against Yelena. “I have to say we just nerded out and I think it lit up this constellation of excitement. Like this couldn’t [have been] easy to pull off. The story encompasses it and…it’s just incredible.”
The film will unite the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four together for the first time in live-action. Besides building on the storylines after Avengers: Endgame, Doomsday is also bringing back fan favorites from older Marvel movies. This includes Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, who also retired from the MCU in 2019 along with Downey Jr.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit the theaters on December 18, 2026.
