Emily Wilson, whose acclaimed 2017 translation was cited by Nolan during the film’s early publicity, has delivered a notably harsh assessment of the upcoming movie.
Writing in the London Review of Books, Wilson said the adaptation, “has nothing convincing to say” and criticized it for lacking “Psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth.” Her comments are particularly striking given her expertise on Homer’s work and the attention Nolan previously gave to her translation. Wilson’s criticism suggests that she sees the film as falling short of the complexity and enduring relevance of the original epic. She was even more direct in her assessment of the screenplay, writing, “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.” The remarks add another layer of scrutiny to Nolan’s ambitious adaptation, which is among the most anticipated films of his career.
Wilson’s comments aren’t the only controversy surrounding The Odyssey. The adaptation of Homer’s epic has also drawn criticism from Elon Musk, who has repeatedly questioned its casting and even floated the idea of creating his own version.
